The National Sports Authority (NSA) of Ghana has officially lifted the suspension on professional boxing, effective November 6, 2025.
This decision marks a significant milestone in the country’s boxing history, paving the way for a brighter future for the sport.
The ban was imposed in September 2025 following the tragic death of young boxer Ernest Akushey, popularly known as “Bahubali,” who sustained severe injuries during a bout at the Bukom Boxing Arena. The NSA’s decision to lift the suspension comes after extensive consultations with the Ministry of Sports and Recreation and the Interim Management Committee (IMC) overseeing the sport’s normalization process.
Key Reforms Implemented
The IMC has reported significant progress in addressing the issues that led to the suspension, including:
– Strengthened Medical Protocols: Publication of updated medical and safety manuals
– Improved Governance: Establishment of a functional interim medical commission
– Centralized Medical Database: Creation of a centralized medical records system
– Insurance Framework: Approval of a comprehensive insurance framework for boxers
– Sustainable Medical Support: Commitment to sustainable medical support systems
A Vibrant Return to Boxing
The NSA commends the IMC, athletes, boxing stakeholders, and the entire sporting community for their patience, diligence, and cooperation during this period of reform. The Authority looks forward to a vibrant return of professional boxing and encourages local and foreign promoters to bring international bouts and collaborations to Ghana under these enhanced standards.
Upcoming Events
Matchroom Boxing, led by British promoter Eddie Hearn, will host its first-ever event in Ghana on December 20, 2025, at the Legon Sports Stadium in Accra. The event will feature Craig Richards vs. Dan Azeez in the main bout, alongside heavyweight prospect Leo Atang and Indian boxer Nishant Dev. This event is expected to be a precursor to a potential Anthony Joshua fight in Ghana in 2026 ⁴.
